History of Naina Devi Temple, Nainital

Let’s first explore the Naina Devi Temple’s history. It has a rich history with its origin in the 15th century. The temple is made to worship goddess Sati and it is believed that at the same spot, her eyes fell when she immolated herself. You will get a mention of this temple in the Kushan period as well. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.

The temple has seen difficult times as well when it was destroyed in 1880 due to a landslide. However, the devotees with deep faith in Naina Devi, rebuilt the temple within 3 years in 1883. Since then it is believed that the goddess is protecting it from natural catastrophes.

Naina Devi Temple Mythological Significance

Naina Devi Temple in Nainital carries a tremendous mythological significance in the Hindu religion. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, where Goddess Sati’s eyes are believed to have fallen. Let us understand the story in brief.

Goddess Sati was the daughter of King Daksha and she wanted to marry Lord Shiva. However, her father, King Daksha, was against this. Despite her father’s disapproval, she married Lord Shiva and became his consort. After this, one day King Daksha organized a grand yagna. He wanted to insult Lord Shiva and that is why he deliberately did not invite his daughter and Lord Shiva to the yagna. Sati still went to the ceremony hoping for reconciliation. However, she could not understand her father’s wish as he humiliated her in front of everyone. Sati could not bear this disrespect from her father and sacrificed herself in the sacred fire of yagna.

This was the moment when Lord Shiva got angry due to the loss of her beloved wife and started performing Tandava. Tandava is a dance form that leads to destruction. Lord Shiva carried Sati’s body and began performing the Tandava. To stop the destruction the gods went to Lord Vishnu and requested to intervene.

Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into 51 parts to create a balance and stop the destruction. People believe that out of these 51 parts, her eyes fell at the location where Naina Devi Temple is currently situated. Therefore, devotees worship Goddess Naina Devi here in the form of divine eyes.

Architecture of Naina Devi Temple

The Naini temple is one the most visited temples in Nainital, not only because of its religious values but also due to its architecture. While entering the temple you see two stone lion statues at the entrance. These statues symbolise the “eyes” of the Goddess Naina Devi, enhancing the beauty of the temple. Overall temple is built in a square shape with two pediments and a triangular dome. There are terracotta tiles that cover the pediments further enhancing the decoration of the temple.

The huge peepal tree inside the temple is a great attraction for the devotees. It seems that it is there to shelter the devotees. An idol of Lord Hanuman is also positioned across the peepal tree and it is believed that he protects the temples. As far as colours are concerned, it has typical Hindu temple colours including red, orange, yellow and white. The beautiful architecture and peace that it has, add great value for the devotees and tourists to visit the temple again and again.

The Legacy of Neem Karoli Baba

The Legacy of Neem Karoli Baba: Stories from Kainchi Dham

The Legacy of Neem Karoli Baba

If you are not a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba, I bet you must have heard or read of him. Wondering why he is so famous not only in India but abroad also. So here we have covered everything that you must know.

Situated in Uttarakhand’s beautiful Kumaon hills, Kainchi Dham is now a spiritual hub for travelers and believers. It is a secluded ashram that is closely associated with the memory of the late Neem Karoli Baba, a spiritual master whose teachings and miracles have an eternal love that touched the lives of everyone. It is Neem Karoli Baba’s strict yet simple way of life and the amazing experiences of his followers that make these teachings of his carry as on the wind far away from the Himalayas.

Who was Neem Karoli Baba?

Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji, a saint and spiritual master who was born in 1900 in a small village in Uttar Pradesh. He is best remembered for his huge insight, his unconditional love, and his prophetic miracles. Maharaj-ji was, in fact, a selfless servant of the Divine and thus, fame and followers were not his goals.

Nevertheless, his way of life has impacted many people including even such prominent figures as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and spiritual teacher Ram Dass.

Seva is defined as being the spirit of giving and receiving from all around therefore being unconditional love. He was an example of simplicity, humility, and compassion, which gave rise to bonds of friendship across the confines of religion and culture. Even after his departure in 1973, his teachings and influence are still present to those who visit Kainchi Dham or welcome his ideas into their hearts.

The Neem Karoli Baba ashram, which is situated near Nainital, was constructed in 1962; however, the   “kainchi” comes from the fact that the road near Nainital has two sharp curves in Hindi.

The setting of the ashram is a very green place with rivers flowing nearby. It is a quiet place that can create spiritual energy to the environment. It has since become a meditation, community service, and personal transformation center, which now brings tourists in search of peace and spiritual growth.

Stories of Miracles and Transformation

The heritage of Neem Karoli Baba lies not only in the gem of truth he has given but also in the endless stories of miracles that are told by those devotees who remember him. These stories which have passed down over centuries reveal the true character of the saint and create a better connection with the divine spirit. And these stories are not limited to Indians but foreigners also.

People believe that visiting Neem Karoli Baba temple with a pure heart can bring success. All over the world devotees visit here. Some most popular stories are

1. The Apple and Steve Jobs

Consequently, events transpired when we found out Steve Jobs, the other founding father of apple Inc., went to India in the 1970s as a seeker of spirituality. He could touch the ashram on the way to Kainchi Dham just after the Maharaj-ji had passed away, but this place remained a landmark.

2. Visit by Mark Zuckerberg

Later on, Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg respected the guidance of Steve Jobs and sought refuge in India. Next, he went to Kainchi Dham according to Steve Jobs’ advice and found his resolve and aspiration all over again. He confirmed this after he had an interview.

3. The Healing Blanket

Neem Karoli Baba was usually wrapped up in an old blanket, which many disciples considered the god with him. In one case, a dying man who used the blanket was cured by it. Even though the saint modestly denied his supreme power, acts of this kind showed how his kindness transcended everything.

4. The Train That Wouldn’t Move

In his youth, Maharaj-ji was once thrown out of a train because of a ticket they refused to give him. Then he stayed calmly and meditated in the shade of a tree. In spite of the engineers’ attempts to fix the problem, the train simply wouldn’t start. Only when he was beckoned back on board by the conductor, the train started to move again. It was at that point the people began thinking of him as a miraculous figure.

Teachings of Neem Karoli Baba

Maharaj-ji’s advice was plain and simple yet very, very transformational:

1. Love All, Serve All

About the essence of service and love was the message of the dharma that He conveyed by means of the selfless, and the love that it brings, which is never imperfect, but is able to rise above the ego, and is only satisfied with the infinite number of those who carry their cross with mercy.

2. Remember God

What to Expect: A First-Timer’s Guide to Paragliding

If you are a newbie Then be careful this section is only for you !!!

If you’ve never been paragliding before, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. Trust me, that’s totally normal First things first, you’ll need to book your paragliding experience. Most hotels and travel agencies in Nainital can help you with this, or you can book directly with paragliding operators.

Pro tip: book in advance during peak season (more on that later) to avoid disappointment!

On the day of your flight, you’ll be taken to the launch site. Here, you’ll meet your instructor and get fitted with your gear. Don’t worry, you won’t be flying solo on your first time! You’ll be doing a tandem flight, which means you’ll be securely attached to an experienced instructor who will handle all the technical bits.

Next comes the exciting part – takeoff! You’ll start on a slope, and when conditions are right, your instructor will tell you to start running. Don’t stop until they tell you to – even if your feet leave the ground! Before you know it, you’ll be airborne.

Once you’re up in the air, it’s time to relax and enjoy the ride. The sensation is often described as peaceful and exhilarating at the same time. You’ll glide smoothly through the air, taking in the spectacular views of Nainital and the surrounding Kumaon region.

Your flight will usually last between 10 to 20 minutes, depending on weather conditions and the specific location. Some operators offer longer flights, so if you’re keen for more air time, be sure to ask about extended options.

Landing is usually the part that makes first-timers the most nervous, but don’t worry! Your instructor will handle everything. As you approach the landing zone, they’ll give you instructions on what to do. Usually, it’s as simple as lifting your legs as you come in to land.

Essential Safety Tips for a Thrilling Paragliding Experience

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Paragliding? Isn’t that dangerous?”

Well, like any adventure sport, paragliding does come with some risks. But with the right precautions and by following safety guidelines, you can minimize these risks and focus on having an awesome time. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Do your research and choose a paragliding operator with a good safety record and positive reviews. Don’t be shy about asking about their safety measures and the experience of their instructors.
  • Your instructor is there to keep you safe. Pay attention during the safety briefing and follow their instructions in the letter. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up!
  • Most reputable operators won’t fly if conditions aren’t suitable, but it’s good to be aware. Ideal conditions are clear skies with light to moderate winds.
  • Your operator will give you a helmet and harness. Check that they fit well and are secured.
  • Be upfront about how fit you are and any health issues you have. Paragliding doesn’t need you to be super athletic, but you should be in decent shape.
  • If you’re feeling anxious, take some slow deep breaths and try to chill out. Getting pnicked up in the air can cause problems.
